地球について考えるのは特別な事ではないという意識が大切です。Thinking about the planet should not be a non-frequent thing.
アジア諸外国から漂着する危険なゴミの問題は、 地方行政やボランティアだけでなく、 国際レベルで対策しなければ解決できません。 漂着ゴミ問題の現状と今後の解決策について、 2009年に小池百合子先生にお聞きしました。
沖縄の島々に漂着する深刻なゴミ処理の問題
光永 今、石垣島・西表島・宮古島、そして沖縄本島では、漂着物が大変な問題になっています。
小池 竹富町もですね。
光永 はい。それ以外の島々にも漂着していています。いち地方の行政だけでは、どうにもならないと思った竹富の町長さんから「アースデイのイベントで取り上げていただけないか」と話がありました。私たちもボランティアで月に一回、漂着ゴミの清掃をしているのですが、竹富の町民は一家庭あたり200円、それから個人で100円を負担して、その費用に充てていますが、とても追いつくものではありません。

アースデイを世界の祝日に
光永 アースデイ（4月22日）は、土曜日、または日曜日に当たった時は、非常に盛り上がるのですが、平日に当たった時は、なかなか盛り上がらないのです。そこで4月22日をアースデイとして、その日に近い土曜日、または日曜日に全国でイベントを開催し、地球について考えたり、世界平和を祈ったり、あるいは国によっては運動をしたり、という日にしていきたいと思っています。少し大きなスケールの話ですが、4月22日を世界の祝日に提案したいと思っています。
小池 日本は休日が多いので、わざわざ休日にしなくても、地球の事を考える日が毎日であっても良いのではないでしょうか。むしろ特別ではなく、当たり前な事にしなくては。イベントを盛り上げるのがアースデイの目的ではないのですから、意識を高める事が大切なのではないでしょうか。

Disposing of litter washed up in Okinawa
Mitsunaga: Litter washing up on shores of Ishigaki-jima, Iriomote-jima, Miyako-jima, and on mainland Okinawa is becoming a huge problem in Japan.
Koike: not to mention Taketomi as well.
Mitsunaga: indeed. There are also other islands that are experiencing the same problem too. The hopeless Mayer of Taketomi has requested us to host an earthly event. We are also doing cleanup campaigns once every month but, the citizens of Taketomi pays 200 yen per capita and 100 yen per person but it’s difficult to catchup with it.
Omission
Make EarthDay a worldwide public holiday
Mitsunaga: People tend to participate in EarthDay (on 22nd of April) events on Sundays and Saturdays more compared to week days. So I have been thinking that we should host events around Japan on break-days close to EarthDay where we discuss about the earth, pray for peace, and start movements depending on the county. It’s a very big scale but I would like for EarthDay to be a world wide public holiday.
Koike: There are a lot of break days in Japan so I don’t think it’s necessary to turn it into a public holiday. Although I personally think that it shouldn’t be just one day for us to think about our planet. It should be something we do more regularly. The main reason why we do EarthDay is not to host a bunch of events and stuff, we do it so that people can be more conscious about the state of our planet.
